You may have to replace all the cartridges the first time
Though most people are able to replace just one empty cartridge, a small number of people have found that mixing Epson and non-Epson cartridges in the same printer may cause it to not recognize the cartridges.
Therefore, be prepared to replace ALL your cartridges the first time you switch from Epson to compatibles. If you replace an individual cartridge, you may notice issues with color matching. The black may look grayish or greenish. This is because colors are often blended. Even the black is mixed with a little color to give it a darker look. Mixing Epson pigment-based ink with compatible dye-based ink can cause these issues.
Attach the chip if necessary
Most cartridges come as one connected piece, but a few have the chip packed separately in the box. Make sure the chip is attached to the cartridge.
Remove the rubber if necessary
Some cartridges contain little pieces of rubber in the clips to protect them from breakage during shipping. These pieces must be removed before inserting them in the printer or the cartridge will not seat properly.
Remove the yellow tape or clear plug at the top
The yellow tape (or the clear plastic plug on some refillables) at the top of the cartridge covers an air hole. Air must be able to enter in order for ink to come out the other end. If you forget to remove it or if the tape breaks off and the hole remains covered, no ink will be fed to the printer. After removing the tape it's a good idea to check that the hole is uncovered.

A 70+ woman in California wrote a long letter about all the issues she was having with compatible cartridges she had purchased locally. We sent her three different sets to try out, regular, reusable and refillable. This is her response:

Just went to the mailbox and found your package with the cartridges. Immediately I went with the new Epson C82+ through the routine recommended by you (turning the printer 4-5 times off and on without cartridges). Then I installed the full set of your refillable Epson ink cartridges into this printer, which was the most difficult printer, and bingo it worked. What a relief. Then I did the same routine with the older Epson C82+, installing the brand new (reusable) cartridges with tanks, and a second bingo. It worked too. Absolutely amazing. I trust now fully that also the third set will work when the time comes and they need to be installed.
Obviously the cartridges from the Californian supplier have a compatibility problem, not yours. In the beginning of the coming month I will pay you for this shipment and I will probably order additionally some refill inks. I had those from you before and they worked fine then. I feel more comfortable with the refillable kind, or with your single use cartridges, your brand only.
You state on your Website that you guarantee that your cartridges will work, and this statement is 100% justified. I probably will send you all my leftover cartridges from the California supplier, but don't want anything in return for those. I would not try to install those again, because they were the ones that started the incompatibility problem.
I am eternally grateful to you for getting me up and running again, now already for the second time. I must say you really go above and beyond your call of duty. I would anytime recommend you and would even add my word and promise for proper functioning to my recommendation. Thank you so much, Izzy. In Germany we would say in such a case: "My gratitude will forever crawl behind you."

From a customer with an Artisan 730 to whom we sent an extra reusable cartridge for testing. They do not appear to work in the A730 printer.
